The following is an outline of the Mentor program practice structure:
1. WARM-UP- This is where we first help the players technically and tactically; executes better and faster and makes better decisions. There is no pressure from an opponent. The only pressure they have is from time and space. The warm-up should not last more than 20 minutes.
2. GAME #1- Can be one or several games simultaneously, all the players are playing. Now there is some pressure from an opponent in a smaller field with smaller number of players per team but a simple game that offers a lot of technical/tactical repetitions a high degree of successes. Playing time about 10 minutes.
3. GAME #2- Can be one or several games simultaneously, all the players are playing. Same as game #1 but now the rules are a little more complicated and therefore a little harder to execute technically and little more complex decision making. Playing time about 10 minutes.
Game #1 and #2 are small steps in getting them closer the GAME.
4. SCRIMMAGE- This is the game. The numbers of players per team are as close to the numbers (if possible) the Saturday game is played. It’s played with two goals, marked with cones or discs and is the size of the goals used on Saturday + Goalkeepers. The scrimmages are always played with regular rules. Playing time about 25-35 minutes.
5. COOL-DOWN- Don’t forget to cool the players down and review some of the major points of the practice.
The scrimmages are used as a test that tells us how and if the players have learned through the progressions and as a teaching tool to help them with rules, organization and decision making in a more complicated environment.
